Do You Wake Up Frequently at Night to Urinate? Here's What a Urologist Has to Say
Nocturia, frequent urination during the night, can disrupt rest and daytime wellbeing. A urologist explains how the diagnosis and treatment are determined.

Disrupted sleep leads to insufficient rest, and those affected may experience marked fatigue and difficulty carrying out their usual activities throughout the day.
Specialists warn that when the need to urinate at night occurs frequently and persists over a longer period of time, a medical assessment is necessary. This helps identify the underlying cause of the problem and determine the most appropriate course of action.
How the diagnosis is made
To reach an accurate diagnosis, the doctor has a thorough discussion with the patient about their symptoms, how much fluid they consume, what treatments they are currently undergoing, and whether they have any associated conditions. This is followed by a clinical examination, supplemented by any investigations deemed necessary.
A frequently used tool in this process is the voiding diary. The patient is asked to complete it for at least three days, recording the times at which they urinate and the volume of urine passed, including during the night. Depending on each individual case, the doctor may recommend laboratory tests, a urine dipstick analysis, as well as imaging investigations such as an ultrasound of the urinary tract.
Treatment for nocturnal urination is not standardised, but is determined on an individual basis, taking into account the identified cause and the specific characteristics of each patient.
