About care homes

What is a care home?
A care home (residential centre) is a facility that provides accommodation, meals, medical supervision and daily assistance to older people who can no longer care for themselves or need specialised care.
What is the difference between a private and a state-run home?
State-run homes are publicly funded and charge lower fees, but places are limited and waiting lists are long. Private homes usually offer superior conditions, personalised services and immediate availability, at a higher cost.
How do I choose the right home?
Assess the senior's needs (medical, physical, emotional), visit several homes in person, check accreditations, read families' reviews and compare prices. On SeniorHelp you can filter by care type, county, price and rating.
What types of care are available in homes?
Residential (permanent) care, permanent medical care, Alzheimer's/dementia care, care for people with disabilities, post-operative recovery, temporary (respite) care and palliative care.
What documents are needed for admission?
Usually: ID card, a medical certificate from the family doctor, recent test results, the pension decision, and possibly a social assessment. Each home may have additional requirements.
Can I visit the home before deciding?
Yes, most homes offer guided visits. We recommend visiting at least 3-4 homes before deciding. On SeniorHelp you can book visits directly from each home's page.

Costs and funding

How much does a care home cost in Romania?
Prices range between 1,500 and 10,000+ lei/month, depending on the county, type of care, facilities and level of dependency. The national average is around 3,500-5,000 lei/month for a private home.
What does the monthly price include?
Usually: accommodation, meals (3 meals + a snack), 24/7 supervision, personal hygiene, recreational activities. Specialised medical services, medication and sanitary supplies may cost extra.
Is there state support to help pay for a home?
Yes, under certain conditions. People with low pensions can request support from the local Social Assistance Directorate. There are also benefits for veterans, people with disabilities and recipients of social aid.
Does a pension cover the cost of a home?
It depends on the pension and the home. The average pension in Romania is around 2,500 lei, and state-run homes can cost 1,000-2,000 lei. For private homes, the difference must be covered by the family.
Can contributions to a home be tax-deductible?
Contributions paid to care homes may be tax-deductible under certain conditions. Consult a tax specialist for your specific situation.

Health and care

What is dementia and how does it manifest?
Dementia is a syndrome that affects memory, thinking and behaviour. The most common forms are Alzheimer's (60-70% of cases), vascular dementia and dementia with Lewy bodies. Signs include recent memory loss, confusion and communication difficulties.
When is the right time to look for a home for my parent?
Warning signs: frequent falls, dangerous forgetfulness (gas, fire), weight loss, social isolation, caregiver burnout, the need for 24/7 supervision, the worsening of a chronic illness.
What is home care and when is it suitable?
Home care involves medical and personal assistance at the senior's home. It is suitable for people with a moderate level of dependency, who still partly manage on their own but need help.
What physical exercises are recommended for seniors?
Daily walks (30 minutes), balance exercises, stretching, swimming, adapted yoga. Important: any exercise programme should be started gradually and under a doctor's supervision.

Legal and rights

What rights does a senior have in a home?
The right to dignity, privacy, information, visits, refusal of treatment and temporary leave. The home must comply with patients' rights legislation and quality standards.

Guardianship is a legal protection measure for people who cannot exercise their rights on their own (advanced dementia, mental illness). It is established by a court decision.
What is curatorship?
Curatorship is a lighter form of protection than guardianship. It applies to people who understand but cannot manage certain matters (financial, medical). The curator assists but does not replace the person's decision.
How do I check whether a home is accredited?
Check the list of licensed homes on the Ministry of Labour's website. On SeniorHelp, verified homes carry the "Confirmed by owner" and "Premium Verified" badges.
What do I do if I suspect neglect in a home?
