The "Bagdasar-Arseni" Clinical Emergency Hospital in Bucharest has decided to temporarily suspend continuous inpatient activity at the Clinical Neuromuscular Rehabilitation Ward, after bedbugs were discovered in several areas of the ward. The measure applies from 17 August to 14 September and aims to eliminate the insects and prevent them from spreading to other areas of the medical facility.

The hospital management has confirmed that the insects identified belong to the species Cimex lectularius, commonly known as the bed bug. Following this discovery, disinfection, pest control, and rodent extermination (DDD) operations have been launched in the affected ward.

What happens to patients

Hospital representatives emphasise that the decision is intended to protect both patients and medical staff, as well as to prevent the bedbugs from spreading to other wards within the hospital.

The suspension does not, however, mean the complete closure of the Neuromuscular Rehabilitation Ward. During this period, patients will continue to be seen through the outpatient specialist clinic and, subject to availability, will also have access to day hospitalisation.

Pest control works will continue throughout the period during which continuous inpatient care remains suspended, with the ward expected to resume normal activity once the interventions have been completed.
