Government Austerity: How It Affects Pensioners and Senior Citizens in Romania
Austerity measures involving pension freezes and income cuts are seriously affecting older people, trade unionists say.

The austerity measures announced by the Bolojan Government are raising serious concerns among trade union organisations, which are warning of the devastating impact these policies will have on pensioners and elderly people in Romania. According to an open letter, the pension freeze and income reductions will push a significant portion of the senior population into poverty.
Trade unionists from Cartel ALFA stress that the measures adopted are "extremely harmful" to society's most vulnerable group — pensioners. They will face a double blow: on one hand, frozen pensions will fail to keep pace with rising inflation, while on the other, the cost of living continues to climb with no compensatory measures from the authorities.
The situation becomes even more alarming when viewed against the current economic backdrop. Romania is grappling with high inflation that particularly affects essential goods — medicines, basic foodstuffs and utilities — categories that account for the largest share of a pensioner's budget. Freezing pensions under these conditions amounts to a real-terms reduction in purchasing power.
Criticism directed at the Executive also targets the discriminatory nature of the austerity measures. While pensioners and workers bear the burden of economic adjustments through income freezes, political privileges and party subsidies remain untouched. This approach creates a social inequity that falls disproportionately on the most exposed age group — senior citizens.
Social policy experts are warning that these measures could have long-term consequences for public health. Pensioners on reduced incomes will be forced to choose between necessary medicines and food, between heating and medical care. This situation could lead to a rise in abandoned medical treatments and a worsening of health problems among the elderly population.
Trade union organisations are calling for an urgent reassessment of these policies and are proposing alternative measures to protect the most vulnerable social group. These include raising the minimum wage, which would have an indirect positive impact on pensions, and implementing specific compensatory measures for older people.
The current social landscape shows that Romania is at a critical juncture in managing its demographic challenges. With a rapidly ageing population and a pension system under strain, austerity measures that directly target this group risk deepening the social crisis and generating long-term social tensions. Specialists warn that disregarding the needs of the senior population could have profound economic and social consequences for society as a whole.
