Refined soybean oil is found in numerous food products that older adults frequently consume: sauces, margarines, biscuits, pastries, tinned goods, dressings, and various types of snacks. This widespread presence means that exposure to these compounds is likely far greater than one might initially assume.
Laboratory animal studies have shown that subjects fed products containing soybean oil began to gain weight within just a few days. While further research is needed to confirm the effects in humans, the preliminary results are concerning — particularly for older adults who already have a slower metabolism.
Recommendations for older adults
Nutrition specialists recommend that older adults pay close attention to food labels and limit their consumption of products containing refined soybean oil. It is important for seniors to opt for healthier alternatives, such as extra virgin olive oil or other unsaturated oils obtained through natural methods.
Given that the metabolism of older adults is more vulnerable, and that many of the health complications affecting seniors are linked to chronic inflammation and cardiovascular problems, avoiding or reducing consumption of ultra-processed soybean oil can be an important preventive measure in maintaining optimal health.
