PET-CT PSMA: the investigation that precisely locates prostate cancer
PET-CT PSMA precisely identifies areas affected by prostate cancer, making it useful for staging and detecting recurrence.
Foto ilustrativăIn prostate cancer, knowing the exact location of tumour tissue can influence the choice of appropriate treatment. There are modern investigations that go beyond anatomical appearance, also analysing the biological characteristics of the affected cells.
One such method is the PSMA PET-CT scan, which is based on a radiotracer capable of binding to PSMA – a protein present in large quantities in many prostate cancer cells. The PET component of the investigation shows the areas where the radiotracer concentrates, whilst the CT component provides information about the precise location of these areas within the body. In this way, doctors can detect lesions both in the prostate or prostatic bed, as well as in lymph nodes, bones, or other organs.
This investigation is used primarily for staging the disease and for identifying a possible recurrence, in situations where PSA levels begin to rise following treatment. Furthermore, PSMA PET-CT can help in selecting patients who may benefit from treatments targeting the same marker, PSMA. The results obtained must be interpreted alongside PSA values, the patient's medical history, and other investigations carried out.
