An abdominal hernia occurs when tissue or part of an organ from the abdominal cavity passes through a weakened point in the abdominal wall. There are several types of hernia, with inguinal hernias being among the most common.

In some patients, a hernia shows no signs for a period of time. In others, however, pain, discomfort, or a visible bulge may appear, becoming more noticeable when the person exerts themselves physically, coughs, or lifts heavy objects.

When it becomes an emergency

An abdominal hernia can develop two dangerous complications: incarceration, when the herniated portion can no longer be pushed back into the abdomen, or strangulation, when the blood vessels of the affected tissue become compressed. In both cases, immediate medical assessment is required, and emergency surgery is sometimes necessary.

Treatment

Surgery is the only curative solution. Most commonly, this is performed using minimally invasive methods — laparoscopically or through robotic surgery.

Information on the causes, symptoms, and treatment of abdominal hernias was provided by Dr. Eliza Gangone, primary care physician in general surgery at Spitalul Clinic SANADOR.
