Flu Season Begins in Romania: What Seniors Need to Know to Stay Protected
Over 3,000 flu cases in a single week mark the start of the flu season. Older adults remain the most vulnerable to severe illness.

Romania is facing the official start of the flu season, after more than 3,000 cases of clinical influenza were recorded in the first week of December — double the figure from the previous week. This worrying surge has put health authorities on high alert and raises serious questions about protecting the most vulnerable, particularly the elderly population.
Data from the National Institute of Public Health (Institutul Național de Sănătate Publică) reveals that total respiratory infections have exceeded 81,000 cases, encompassing clinical influenza, acute upper respiratory tract infections, and pneumonia. Although the figures represent a 28% increase on the previous week, they remain below levels recorded during the same period last year, offering some hope that the epidemic can be kept under control.
The geographical distribution of cases shows that Bucharest and the counties of Botoșani, Iași, Suceava, Cluj, and Brașov are the worst-affected areas. Of the 28 laboratory-confirmed cases, the majority are caused by influenza A virus, known for its greater aggressiveness. For older residents in these regions, maximum vigilance is essential.
On a more encouraging note, no deaths associated with the influenza virus have been reported so far this season. Nevertheless, specialists warn that elderly people remain the category most exposed to the risk of severe complications, including pneumonia and other life-threatening conditions.
Vaccination — the first line of defence for seniors
The flu vaccination campaign continues to be available, with over 1.19 million doses already administered. Seniors are entitled to free vaccination, being included among the categories eligible for reimbursement. Doctors stress that vaccination remains the most effective method of prevention, significantly reducing the risk of severe illness and hospitalisation.
For elderly people living in care homes or receiving home care services, vaccination becomes even more important. These environments can facilitate the rapid spread of the virus, and the health consequences for an already frail population can be devastating.
Essential protective measures in everyday life
Beyond vaccination, health authorities recommend strict adherence to hygiene rules. Frequent handwashing with soap and water, or the use of an alcohol-based hand sanitiser, is crucial — particularly as the influenza virus can survive on surfaces and may be transmitted by touching contaminated objects.
Wearing a mask in enclosed and crowded spaces — such as public transport, pharmacies, or medical surgeries — is becoming a necessity for protecting older people. Likewise, avoiding crowded places wherever possible and regularly ventilating rooms can significantly reduce the risk of infection.
A balanced diet rich in protein to support the immune system, combined with adequate hydration of at least two litres of water per day, helps maintain the health of the respiratory mucosa. These simple yet effective measures can make the difference between a mild passage through the flu season and a severe illness requiring hospitalisation.
