COVID-19 continues to threaten seniors: why elderly people end up in intensive care in 2026

Although COVID-19 has faded from public attention, Romanian doctors are sounding the alarm: the virus continues to cause severe illness, particularly among elderly people. Dr Elena Copaciu stresses that intensive care units are still receiving patients with serious complications from SARS-CoV-2 infection, the majority of whom are older adults with underlying chronic conditions.

The situation is all the more concerning given that vulnerable groups — especially those aged over 65 — are not making optimal use of the protection offered by updated vaccines and available antiviral treatments. This neglect of preventive measures exposes older adults to serious health risks, including the need for intensive care admission.

Specialists point out that elderly people have weaker immune systems and frequently suffer from multiple chronic conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or cardiovascular disease. These conditions make them extremely vulnerable to severe forms of COVID-19, which can rapidly progress to respiratory failure and other complications requiring intensive care.

A particularly worrying aspect is that many older people and their families believe the danger of COVID-19 has passed. This mistaken perception leads to booster vaccinations being skipped and antiviral treatments going unused in the early stages of illness — precisely when they could prevent progression to severe disease.

Doctors strongly recommend that older adults receive their booster doses regularly, observe hygiene measures, and seek antiviral treatment within the first few days of symptom onset. Carers and the families of elderly people must also remain vigilant and not dismiss seemingly minor respiratory symptoms in this age group.
