Electronic Prescriptions and Online Access to Medical History - Benefits for Seniors

The digital health platform will give elderly people simple access to prescriptions and medical records via their national ID number, eliminating paperwork.

Electronic Prescriptions and Online Access to Medical History - Benefits for Seniors

Romania's healthcare system is preparing for a wide-ranging modernisation that will have a significant impact on older adults and seniors. The new Health Insurance IT Platform, funded through the PNRR (National Recovery and Resilience Plan) with 100 million euros, is at an advanced stage of implementation, with technical development 65% complete.

Simplified access to medical information

The new digital platform will allow seniors to easily access their electronic medical record through the "E-Sănătatea mea" mobile application or online, using only their national identification number (CNP) and a unique identification code. For older adults, this means that all important medical information will be centralised in one place: electronic prescriptions, referral letters, doctors' recommendations, consultation history and test results.

The end of paper prescriptions

One of the most significant changes involves the complete elimination of printed prescriptions from GP surgeries. For seniors, this means a considerable simplification of the process: they will no longer need to keep and carry physical documents that can be lost or damaged. At the pharmacy, medications will be dispensed quickly on the basis of the CNP alone, with the pharmacist having instant access to medical prescriptions.

Benefits for elderly care

This digitalisation brings particular advantages for older people and their families. Family members and carers will be able to monitor seniors' health more easily, with access to a complete and up-to-date medical history. For older adults with chronic conditions requiring constant monitoring, the platform will provide a clear record of treatments and the progression of their health status.

The authorities emphasise that this transformation will reduce excessive bureaucracy and shorten waiting times — matters of particular importance for seniors who frequently use medical services. The project represents an essential step in bringing Romania's healthcare system into line with European digital standards, delivering tangible benefits for all age groups, and for older adults especially.
