Over 80,000 Respiratory Infections Recorded in Romania in One Week, INSP Data Shows
INSP reports 80,193 cases of respiratory infections and 210 cases of clinical influenza in one week, standing 11.9% above the average of recent years.

The National Institute of Public Health (INSP) has published data on respiratory infections recorded in Romania between 28 September and 4 October 2026. A total of 80,193 cases were reported nationwide, a figure that includes clinical influenza, acute upper respiratory tract infections, and pneumonia.
Compared with the same week in the previous season, when 80,078 cases were recorded, the increase stands at just 0.1%. The difference becomes more apparent, however, when compared with the average for the 2018–2026 seasons (excluding pandemic periods), which was 71,657 cases. The current figure is therefore 11.9% higher than this average.
Influenza cases and severe infections
During the same period, 210 clinical influenza cases were confirmed, compared with 172 in the corresponding week of the previous season. Seven cases of severe acute respiratory infections (SARI) were also reported.
INSP stated: "SARI surveillance began this year six weeks earlier than in previous years and will continue."
Laboratory analyses confirmed a single infection with an unsubtyped type A influenza virus during the week under review. No confirmed influenza-related deaths were reported during this period.
Progress of the influenza vaccination campaign
According to data from the National Electronic Vaccination Register (RENV), 79,330 influenza vaccinations had been recorded by 4 October 2026. Of these, 77,764 were administered to individuals in categories eligible for reimbursed vaccination under the compensated scheme, whilst 624 vaccinations were carried out at authorised community pharmacies.
