Hantavirus in Romania: The First Confirmed Case and What Seniors Need to Know

Romania has recorded its first confirmed case of hantavirus, a rare viral infection that can cause severe complications, particularly in older people and those with pre-existing conditions.

Dr Valeriu Gheorghiță has issued important official clarifications, emphasising that person-to-person transmission of the virus is extremely rare. Hantavirus is spread primarily through contact with infected rodents or by inhaling contaminated particles from the surrounding environment.

Risks for vulnerable older adults

Hantavirus infections, though rare, can cause severe forms of illness, often requiring admission to intensive care units. Older people with weakened immune systems or chronic cardiovascular, renal, or respiratory conditions face a significantly higher risk of serious complications.

The virus can cause pulmonary syndrome or haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome — both potentially fatal conditions if not diagnosed and treated promptly.

Preventive measures for older adults

Experts advise older adults to avoid areas with rodent infestations, to keep their homes clean, and to ventilate spaces before undertaking any cleaning activities. It is also essential to seek medical attention immediately should fever, muscle pain, or breathing difficulties arise, particularly following exposure to at-risk environments.

Health authorities are closely monitoring the situation and will be implementing additional surveillance measures to prevent the spread of the infection.
