A career in senior care

Nursing assistant (infirmier)

A nursing assistant ensures beneficiaries' hygiene and comfort and assists the medical staff. It's an essential role in care homes, hospitals and rehab centres, with constant demand.

About the job

A nursing assistant (COR code 532103) handles beneficiaries' personal hygiene, mobility and comfort, coordinated by the nurse. • Changing bed linen and managing incontinence equipment
  • Transporting and mobilising people with reduced mobility
  • Keeping the living space clean and disinfected
  • Collecting and managing waste per protocols
  • Assisting the nurse with basic care procedures

Requirements

  • Secondary education (high school or vocational); at least 8 grades to access the course
  • 'Nursing assistant' qualification (ANC course or post-secondary medical school)
  • Physical stamina and attention to hygiene protocols
  • Medical certificate at hiring

Certifications & courses

  • ANC-authorised 'Nursing assistant' course (2–4 months) — Red Cross, post-secondary medical schools, private providers

  • Public and private hospitals
  • Public care homes (DGASPC) and private residential centres

Frequently asked questions

Can a nursing assistant administer medication?
No. Administering medication is solely the nurse's or doctor's responsibility. The nursing assistant helps with procedures but does not perform autonomous medical acts.
How long is the nursing-assistant course and what does it cost?
About 2–4 months (theory + practice), usually costing between RON 800 and 2,000 at private providers. Red Cross courses can be partly subsidised.
Can I work as a nursing assistant on experience alone?
In theory yes, via a skills assessment, if the ANC provider runs such sessions. In practice, hospital employers usually require the qualification certificate.
