A career in senior care

Physiotherapist

A physiotherapist assesses and restores seniors' functional capacity — mobility, balance, fall prevention. An in-demand role in rehab-focused care homes.

About the job

A physiotherapist (COR code 226405) designs and runs individual rehabilitation programmes for the elderly: exercises, joint mobilisation and fall prevention. The profession is practised only with a licence from the Romanian College of Physiotherapists (CFZRO).

Responsibilities

  • Initial assessment of functional capacity (joint, muscle and balance evaluation)
  • Designing the individual rehab plan, together with the doctor
  • Running physiotherapy sessions (passive, active-assisted and active exercises)
  • Joint-mobilisation techniques and, once certified, therapeutic massage
  • Fall prevention — balance and coordination exercises
  • Monitoring progress and adjusting the rehab plan
  • Educating beneficiaries and families on home exercises

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in physiotherapy / physical therapy (3–4 years)
  • CFZRO registration and a valid practice licence
  • Professional liability insurance (required by CFZRO)
  • Preferred: geriatrics / neurological-rehab specialisation

Certifications & courses

  • CFZRO practice licence (mandatory)
  • Therapeutic massage and manual-technique courses (if not in the degree)
  • CME points via CFZRO to keep the licence

Where you can work

  • Private residential centres with a medical / rehab focus

  • Private rehab clinics and individual practices

Frequently asked questions

Can a physiotherapist work without CFZRO registration?
No. Practising without a CFZRO licence is illegal, regardless of the employer type (public, private, NGO).
What distinguishes a physiotherapist from a 'fiziokinetoterapeut'?
Physical therapy also includes electrotherapy and balneology techniques alongside physiotherapy proper. Both can work in care homes; in practice employers don't always distinguish.
Do I need a master's to progress in geriatrics?
Not mandatory, but a master's (neurological or geriatric rehab) opens coordinator roles and is an advantage in premium homes.
