Romania ranks 61st out of 70 economies analysed in 2026, dropping 12 places compared to 2025. Poland climbed 11 positions, reaching 41st place.

Romania has dropped 12 places in the global economic competitiveness rankings and now sits in 61st place, according to a report by the IMD World Competitiveness Centre. It is worth noting that the analysis covers only 70 countries, among the world's most significant economies, meaning Romania finds itself near the bottom of this select ranking.
By contrast, Poland advanced 11 places, climbing to 41st position.
The report, now in its 39th edition, is produced annually and analyses the development of the world's leading economies, assessing how attractive they are for investment and for the business environment. The ranking takes into account over 340 criteria, grouped into four main categories: infrastructure, economic performance, government efficiency, and business efficiency.
Key challenges identified for Romania
- Improving the efficiency of public spending in order to reduce the budget deficit
- Accelerating investment in cutting-edge fields such as research, development, and innovation
- Supporting companies through the process of digital transformation, alongside improving digital skills
- Modernising the healthcare and education systems to meet the country's societal needs
- Modernising the national defence industry
