Hepatic Abscess: The Infection That Hides in the Liver and What Symptoms to Watch For

Persistent fever, chills, and pain in the upper right side of the abdomen should not automatically be attributed to a common digestive problem. Sometimes, these signs may indicate that the liver has become the site of a localised infection, known as a hepatic abscess.

A hepatic abscess is a collection of pus within the liver. It most commonly develops as a result of a bacterial infection, but may have other causes as well. Factors that can contribute to its development include infections of the bile ducts, abdominal infections, recent surgical procedures, chronic illness, or a weakened immune system.

Symptoms can vary and are not always clear-cut from the outset. These include:

• fever
• abdominal pain
• general malaise
• nausea
• occasionally, yellowing of the skin (jaundice)

Blood tests and imaging investigations are required to establish a diagnosis, including ultrasound, CT scan, or MRI. Treatment involves the administration of antibiotics, and in many cases drainage of the pus collection is also necessary.

Specialists emphasise that it is essential for the patient to seek medical attention promptly, as such a deep-seated infection, if left untreated, can progress to a serious condition. The specific course of treatment depends on several factors: the size of the abscess, the likely underlying cause, the type of bacteria involved, and the patient's general state of health.
