Flu vaccination has begun: who receives the vaccine for free and who gets a 50% subsidy

The Ministry of Health is urging the public to get their flu vaccination ahead of the cold season, with priority given to those at greater risk of developing severe forms of flu or complications. In a statement published on Friday, the institution outlined who is eligible for a free vaccine and who will receive partial reimbursement.

"The flu vaccination is one of the safest and most effective methods of protection against influenza. Getting vaccinated every year helps reduce the risk of severe illness, complications, and hospitalisation," the Ministry of Health's statement reads.

Who receives the vaccine free of charge

Vaccination is recommended as a priority for the following groups, who are entitled to a free flu vaccine:

  • children aged at least 6 months;
  • pregnant women;
  • people aged over 65;
  • people with chronic illnesses;
  • medical, healthcare, and auxiliary staff;
  • institutionalised adults and children.

Who is eligible for 50% reimbursement

People aged between 45 and 65 who do not have chronic illnesses will receive 50% reimbursement of the vaccine's reference price.

Those who do not fall into any of these categories may still get vaccinated, but must purchase the vaccine at full price.

Regardless of category, anyone wishing to be vaccinated must first visit their GP, who will issue a prescription for the vaccine. The vaccine is then collected from a pharmacy on the basis of this prescription. The vaccination itself can be administered either at the GP's surgery or at community pharmacies that are authorised to administer vaccines.

Message from the interim Minister of Health

The interim Minister of Health, Cseke Attila, urged the public not to delay vaccination: "We recommend that all citizens do not put off their flu vaccination and get immunised before the cold season begins. Annual vaccination is one of the most important preventive measures. All forms of flu vaccine available for the current season can be found in pharmacies, subject to available stocks. It is important that each of us pays due attention to protecting our own health and the health of those around us."

Additional recommendations

In addition to vaccination, the Ministry of Health recommends regular hand hygiene and frequent ventilation of indoor spaces, in order to reduce the spread of flu and other respiratory viruses. People who fall ill are advised to seek medical advice when symptoms are severe or their condition worsens.
