Nestled at the foot of the Cindrel Mountains in Șura Mică, the Maria Theresia Centre offers seniors a dignified, active and comfortable life, to truly European standards.
A story built on love and courage
The story of the Maria Theresia Care Home began with a chance holiday encounter in Italy between two former university classmates: Dr Nicolae Bârsan, who had settled in Austria with over 25 years of experience in elderly care in Vienna, and Dr Eric Schelker, a physician of Sibiu origin who had made his home in Germany. Together with a mutual friend from Sibiu, Emilia Trană, the three decided to build a centre in Romania where seniors could receive exactly the same standard of care as in Western Europe.
Inaugurated on 29 September 2018, following an investment of over 2.5 million euros, the Maria Theresia care home in Sibiu is set on a 13,000 sq m plot, 8,000 sq m of which is parkland — a green oasis where residents enjoy walks, a garden, a gazebo, and even a wood-fired bread oven.
„Many of our colleagues have moved abroad and left their parents behind in Romania. Talking with Dr Schelker, we decided to build a place in Sibiu County where old age could be lived with dignity."
— Dr Nicolae Bârsan, co-founder of Maria Theresia
Comprehensive medical care, 24 hours a day
The centre provides medical care for seniors through an interdisciplinary team of over 30 professionals — including a general practitioner, nurses, care assistants, a psychologist, a social worker and a physiotherapist — all available around the clock. Each resident receives an individualised socio-medical assessment, and their care plan is continuously adapted to their actual needs.
The centre has extensive experience in specialist care for people living with Alzheimer's disease, dementia, Parkinson's disease, post-stroke sequelae, and motor or cognitive disabilities. The daily menu is planned in collaboration with a nutritionist and prepared in the centre's own kitchen — including five meals a day, tailored to residents' preferences.
🩺 Round-the-Clock Care — medical supervision and assistance 24h/24, 7 days a week
💊 Medical Care — continuous monitoring, tailored treatments, internal consultations
🏃 Medical Rehabilitation — personalised programmes to restore physical function
🤸 Physiotherapy — exercises to build muscle strength, balance and joint mobility
🎨 Recreational Activities — literary evenings, music, games, occupational therapy in the garden
🥗 Personalised Nutrition — daily menu with a nutritionist, on-site kitchen, 5 meals/day
Medical rehabilitation and physiotherapy — more than just treatment
A cornerstone of the centre is its medical rehabilitation programme in Sibiu, delivered through individual physiotherapy sessions designed to improve muscle strength, balance and joint mobility. Therapy programmes are built around each resident's medical history and adjusted continuously in line with their progress.
The results speak for themselves: many residents — including those who were initially given very little hope — have regained the mobility and independence they believed they had lost for good.
An exceptional setting — hotel-standard comfort just 8 km from Sibiu
Located in Șura Mică, 7 km from Sibiu Airport and 8 km from the city centre, the centre is easily accessible from Cluj, Brașov, Mureș, Alba and Vâlcea counties as well. Its 50 spacious rooms each have a private bathroom and are furnished in a warm, 4–5-star hotel style. The centre is equipped with a lift, ramps, grab rails, corridor handrails, video monitoring, a chapel, and a first-floor dining room decorated in 19th-century style, complete with a piano for music lovers.
For families who are temporarily unable to care for an elderly relative — whether due to holidays or emergencies — the centre also offers short-stay accommodation.
„This is an ideal residence for seniors. The staff are skilled, hardworking, helpful and genuinely dedicated to the care of elderly residents. Seniors benefit from round-the-clock medical care, physiotherapy, cultural activities and opportunities to socialise."
— Liana Capota, family member of a resident
Part of Romania's most ambitious senior care network
At the end of 2025, Maria Theresia became one of the founding pillars of the Echo Elderly Care platform — a national network of senior care centres built by Morphosis Capital alongside the founders of AsertivO and entrepreneur Iulian Pleșcan. The stated goal: 10 centres in Romania's major cities, with a total capacity of over 2,000 residents, standardised medical protocols and professionally managed operations at a national level.
This partnership confirms that Maria Theresia Sibiu is not simply a care home with good facilities — it is a benchmark for senior care in Romania.
