West Nile in Romania: 9 cases and 2 deaths confirmed so far this season, announces INSP

The National Institute of Public Health (INSP) issued an updated report on Thursday regarding the spread of the West Nile virus in Romania, in the midst of the season when the disease is transmitted through mosquito bites.

According to official data, between 3 June and 30 July 2026, nine cases of West Nile virus infection were recorded, of which six were confirmed and three were probable. Two patients died — both were elderly individuals with underlying medical conditions (comorbidities).

"In the 2026 season, between 03.06.2026 and 30.07.2026, nine cases of West Nile virus infection were recorded, of which six were confirmed cases and three were probable cases. Two deaths were recorded, in elderly patients with comorbidities," INSP stated.

Who fell ill

Of the total cases, four occurred in people aged between 20 and 39, and two in people aged between 70 and 79. Four women and five men were affected, and five of the patients lived in rural areas.

By county, cases were reported as follows: Argeș (1), Botoșani (1), Cluj (1), Iași (1), Mureș (1), Suceava (2), Harghita (1), and Bucharest municipality (1).

INSP recommendations for preventing infection

• Avoiding exposure to mosquitoes by wearing long-sleeved clothing and long trousers
• Using mosquito repellent products
• Using insecticides inside and around the home
• Fitting protective screens on windows to prevent mosquitoes from entering the house
• Draining any pools of standing water in the garden or around the property
• Removing containers of stagnant water and household waste
