West Nile Virus: 72 confirmed cases and 5 deaths in 2026, far exceeding 2025 levels

The National Institute of Public Health (INSP) released data on Friday, 11 September 2026, showing a significant increase in West Nile virus infections this year. Between 3 July and 9 September 2026, 83 cases were confirmed or classified as probable, of which 72 were confirmed, and 5 deaths were recorded. The deceased were elderly and had other underlying conditions (comorbidities).

During the same period in 2025, the situation was considerably better: only 18 cases reported and no deaths.

Comparison with previous years

INSP data for comparable periods in previous years show the following trend:

  • 2023 (up to 30 August): 28 cases and 4 deaths, with the majority of infections occurring in urban areas, București leading, and people over 60 being the most affected;
  • 2024: 54 cases and 5 deaths;
  • 2025: 18 cases, with no deaths;
  • 2026 (3 July – 9 September): 72 confirmed cases and 5 deaths.

Comparing these figures, a gradual increase in the number of infections is evident over the years, with a temporary decline in 2025 followed by a sharp resurgence in 2026, when the number of cases reached the highest level recorded during the period analysed.

Where most cases are occurring

In 2026, București remains the area with the highest number of reported cases, followed by counties in the south and east of the country. The profile of affected patients is similar to that of previous years: predominantly elderly individuals from urban areas.
