Romanians in the diaspora can have civil status documents transcribed through a lawyer – new facility for seniors

The Romanian Parliament has adopted a new legislative measure that simplifies administrative procedures for Romanians living abroad, including elderly members of the diaspora who need to have their civil status documents transcribed into Romanian registers.

Under the new law, the transcription of civil status certificates and extracts issued by foreign authorities may now be carried out through a lawyer, on the basis of a special legal power of attorney. This amendment supports those who are unable to travel to Romania to complete these formalities in person.

The measure is particularly significant for elderly Romanians living abroad who, due to health issues or advanced age, cannot easily travel to resolve the necessary bureaucratic matters. Many of them required the transcription of documents in order to regularise their legal status or to access various rights and benefits.

The simplified procedure now allows a lawyer to take on responsibility for these administrative tasks, removing the requirement for the applicant to be physically present at civil registry offices in Romania. This change is especially beneficial for older individuals with limited mobility or health difficulties.

To make use of this facility, Romanians in the diaspora will need to draw up a special legal power of attorney, authorising their chosen lawyer to carry out the transcription of the required documents into Romanian civil registers on their behalf.
