Designated Prime Minister promises pension indexation from 2027 and measures for families

Designated Prime Minister Eugen Tomac has presented, as part of his governance programme, important measures aimed at both supporting families and improving the situation of pensioners in Romania.

Pension indexation promised for 2027

One of the key proposals in the governance programme is the indexation of pensions starting 1 January 2027. This measure comes in the context of many Romanian pensioners facing financial difficulties due to inflation and rising living costs.

Support measures for families

The governance programme also includes proposals to support families with young children. These include an exemption from the health insurance contribution (CASS) for mothers with children below a certain age — a measure projected to have a budgetary impact of less than 0.02% of GDP, designed as a pro-natalist initiative.

A further proposal involves raising the cap on the child-rearing allowance from its current level of 8,500 RON to between 10,000 and 12,000 RON. This increase could provide additional support to families with young children during the crucial early years of a child's life.

The measures proposed in the governance programme reflect a commitment to supporting both the older generation, through pension indexation, and young families, through tax exemptions and increased child-rearing allowances.
