The Ministry of Health announced on Monday the activation of special plans for periods of extreme temperatures. Public health directorates, ambulance services, and emergency departments have been asked to implement the necessary measures to reduce health risks to the population.

In areas where the number of requests increases, ambulance crews will be placed on alert and their numbers supplemented. Health authorities must also check the conditions in which medical assistance is provided in hospitals and other healthcare facilities. Inspections include stocks of emergency medicines, particularly those used for conditions caused or aggravated by extreme heat. The availability of human resources will also be assessed, so that medical facilities can handle a higher number of requests.

Water points and inspections at food establishments

Public health directorates will work with local authorities to set up drinking water distribution points. Spaces may also be organised in public areas where people can receive assistance on days of very high temperatures. The Ministry has also called for more intensive hygiene and sanitation inspections at food establishments and school camps, as part of measures to prevent heat-related issues.

The public is advised to drink sufficient water and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, especially during peak temperature hours, as well as to limit intense physical activity outdoors. The Ministry highlights that particular care must be taken with children, the elderly, and people with chronic conditions, as these groups are more vulnerable to the effects of extreme heat.

"A simple gesture, such as drinking water regularly and avoiding prolonged exposure to heat, can prevent serious health problems. Take care of yourselves and those around you!", the Ministry of Health urged.
