Shortage of MMR vaccine in several counties: risk of measles epidemic rises
Doses of the MMR vaccine are in short supply across several counties in Romania, leaving children unable to be immunised on time. GPs are awaiting new deliveries promised by the Ministry of Health.
Foto ilustrativăRomania faces a significant risk of a measles epidemic, after doses of the vaccine that protects against this disease went missing from the stocks of several counties. The situation makes it impossible to vaccinate children on time.
This is one of the essential vaccines in the national immunisation schedule, and its absence from the shelves has generated concern among the population.
According to GPs, when they requested new doses from the regional public health directorates, the response was the same everywhere: the vaccine is not available in stock.
To prevent the immunisation campaign from coming to a complete halt, the public health directorates have requested additional deliveries from the Ministry of Health. To date, the only response received has been a promise that new doses will arrive in the coming period.
Note: Although measles primarily affects children, seniors who were not vaccinated in childhood or have a weakened immune system may also be vulnerable in the event of an outbreak. For information about their own immunisation status, families can contact their GP.
