Energy bills set to rise in 2027: price increases estimated between 5% and 30%
Electricity prices for 2027 are already 12–14% higher than current levels, whilst gas storage facilities are less full than they were last year.
Foto ilustrativăRomanians could face higher energy bills in 2027. The first quotes for electricity to be delivered next year already show prices roughly 12–14% above current levels, and the situation on the natural gas market offers little reassurance either.
According to data presented by Sorin Elisei, Secretary General at the Ministry of Energy, one megawatt-hour for 2027 is currently quoted at approximately 650 RON, compared to around 570 RON/MWh at present. It is worth noting that this wholesale price difference does not automatically translate into an identical increase in household bills — the final amount paid by consumers will depend on how the market develops in the period ahead.
What influences the price of electricity
Current quotes are an early signal, not a certainty. They may change depending on several factors: domestic electricity production, import volumes, consumption levels, and the performance of hydroelectric plants.
One cause for concern is hydroelectric output itself, which has been affected by this year's drought. In response to difficulties within the energy system, the authorities have decided to extend the energy market state of alert until 30 September. Lower domestic production may force additional imports, and energy sourced from abroad tends to be more expensive — a factor that could ultimately be reflected in the prices paid by consumers.
How much could household bills increase
At present, there is no reliable estimate of the impact on bills. The scenarios under discussion vary considerably: from an increase of approximately 5% in the optimistic scenario, to as much as 30% in more pessimistic ones.
This wide gap between estimates reflects just how many unknowns remain. The final price will be influenced by Romania's domestic production, the volume of energy imported, winter season consumption, and developments across the region. In other words, a 12–14% rise in the traded price of energy for 2027 does not necessarily mean an equally sized increase on every household's bill.
The situation on the natural gas market
Natural gas is not without its risks either. Storage facilities are currently filled to more than 10% below the level recorded at the same point last year — a trend observed across other European countries as well. Additional pressure comes from supply difficulties involving certain exporting nations, against a backdrop of tensions in the Middle East. Should these supply problems persist and winter consumption rise significantly, prices could be pushed even higher.
