A 140-year-old hospital in Galați will be modernised with 32 million RON in European funds

A major modernisation project will completely transform the medical infrastructure in the Galaţi commune of Ivești, which is home to a healthcare facility with a history of nearly 140 years. The investment, worth over 32,000,000 RON, will bring significant benefits to elderly patients in the rural area, who will gain access to improved medical services and modern treatment facilities.

The modernisation covers three pavilions essential to senior care: the Internal Medicine Pavilion, the Chronic Diseases Pavilion, and the Paediatrics Pavilion, with a combined floor area of over 15,000 square metres. These buildings, currently rated in seismic risk class I, will be fully reinforced to withstand earthquakes, thereby providing greater safety for admitted patients.

Green technology and energy efficiency

In addition to structural reinforcement, the hospital will be equipped with modern facilities for generating energy from renewable sources. Photovoltaic panels, solar panels, and heat pumps will ensure energy efficiency and help reduce operational costs — benefits that will be reflected in the quality of care provided to patients.

For many families in the area, the hospital in Ivești is the primary accessible healthcare option. Modernising this facility will eliminate the need for lengthy journeys to other medical centres, which is particularly important for elderly patients with limited mobility or chronic conditions requiring constant monitoring.

The project forms part of a broader strategy to improve access to quality medical services in rural areas, where older people make up a significant proportion of the population. The investment will help reduce health disparities between urban and rural communities, offering treatment conditions comparable to those found in major medical centres.
