Sindicatul Sanitas Threatens General Strike in Hospitals Over Low Wages

The Sanitas trade union within the Romanian healthcare system has announced that it will organise a general strike across all hospitals in the country if the authorities do not respond positively to its request for salary increases for medical staff.

Union representatives argue that nurses' salaries have remained at an extremely low level, comparable to 1953 standards, and do not reflect the crucial importance of this profession within the healthcare system.

This situation could significantly affect elderly people's access to emergency medical services and routine treatments. Older adults, who represent a group with frequent and complex medical needs, may face difficulties in obtaining the care they require in the event of a general strike.

Union members are also critical of the Health Minister's absence from negotiations with the Ministry of Labour, arguing that this demonstrates an attitude of indifference towards the problems facing the healthcare system.
