Free screening in rural Romania: a quarter of elderly people assessed show signs of prediabetes

A national free medical screening campaign in rural Romania has revealed an alarming picture of elderly health in isolated communities. In just six months, mobile medical teams assessed more than 3,000 people and identified a worrying rate of prediabetes among the population examined.

The medical prevention initiative was delivered through medical caravans travelling directly to villages and communes where access to healthcare is limited. This innovative approach enabled the early identification of health problems in people who would otherwise have had no opportunity to undergo regular medical check-ups.

The results show that approximately one third of those assessed have prediabetes, a condition that can progress to type 2 diabetes if not properly managed. For elderly people in rural areas, this situation is particularly concerning, given their limited access to specialist medical services and ongoing monitoring programmes.

The medical caravans demonstrated the importance of bringing healthcare directly to the patient, especially for elderly populations who face difficulties travelling to urban medical centres. This screening method allows for the early identification of health risks and the implementation of preventive measures before conditions worsen.

The data collected underline the urgent need to expand medical prevention programmes across rural Romania, where older people represent a vulnerable group requiring specialist medical attention and consistent monitoring to maintain their health.
