Romania ranks first in the European Union in terms of price increases. According to data published on Wednesday by Eurostat, in July prices in our country were more than 8% higher than in the same period last year, while the EU average inflation rate was just 3%.

The largest price increases were recorded in food, followed by services, with both categories exceeding the 8% threshold compared to the previous period.

Large gaps compared to other EU member states

While Romania maintains its top position in terms of price rises, other European countries are reporting far more favourable situations. Czechia and Sweden are among the EU member states with the lowest inflation rates, sitting at the opposite end of the spectrum from Romania.

These differences are directly reflected in supermarket shelf prices, as well as in the cost of services for the general public.

Discontent over the cost of living

Against a backdrop of rising prices, growing numbers of Romanians are voicing their discontent with austerity measures and calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan. Among those affected are pensioners, who say they are finding it increasingly difficult to cope due to the constant rise in prices, while their incomes remain low.
