Without an indexation of incomes, the purchasing power of pensioners will continue to decline, and the risk of poverty will increase. Currently, 2.7 million Romanians receive pensions below the value of the consumer basket. Even the president of the Fiscal Council has stated that pension indexation is necessary.

Scenarios under consideration

Indexation at 7%:

  • The minimum pension of 1,281 RON would increase by 89.67 RON, rising to 1,371 RON.
  • A pension of 2,000 RON would increase by 140 RON, rising to 2,140 RON.
  • A pension of 3,500 RON would increase by 245 RON, rising to 3,745 RON.

Indexation at 10%:

  • The minimum pension of 1,281 RON would increase by 128 RON, rising to 1,409 RON.
  • A pension of 2,000 RON would increase by 200 RON, rising to 2,200 RON.
  • A pension of 3,500 RON would increase by 350 RON, rising to 3,850 RON.

By how much would pensions need to rise to restore purchasing power?

Scenario with 12% indexation:

  • A pension of 1,500 RON would increase by 180 RON.
  • A pension of 2,000 RON would increase by 240 RON.
  • A pension of 2,500 RON would increase by 300 RON.
  • A pension of 3,000 RON would increase by 360 RON.
  • A pension of 4,000 RON would increase by 480 RON.
