Mureșan: Indexation of pensions and public sector salaries possible from 2027

Designated Prime Minister Siegfried Mureșan stated, in an interview with G4Media, that indexing pensions and public sector wages is necessary and that this measure should be included in the 2027 budget law. He emphasised that there have been no increases over the past two years.

"We will draft next year's budget law at the end of this year. We want it to be adopted by the Romanian Parliament on time, by 31 December, at which point we will know exactly how much we can afford and from when. Pensions and public sector salaries have not increased in two years. I believe pensions must be indexed as soon as possible; when we draft the budget law, we will know exactly how much we can afford and from what date. However, my objective is to have pension indexation in 2027, along with the indexation of public sector salaries as soon as possible," said Siegfried Mureșan.

The designated Prime Minister remained vague, however, regarding the source of funding for these increases, referring in general terms to state revenues. "We will increase pensions and salaries; we will index them as soon as we can afford to do so next year. Where will the money come from? From state revenues. I do not believe the economy will contract next year. I think the hardest part is behind us, provided we remain responsible, and the inflation rate will continue to stabilise, the deficit will continue to fall, and state revenues will grow, while expenditure has already been reduced. We will look at where we can further cut wasteful public spending and state aid," said Mureșan.

The designated Prime Minister also noted that 90% of state aid goes to just five or six companies in the transport and energy sectors. Regarding these companies, Mureșan stated that they must provide quality services at reasonable prices and, wherever possible, generate profit for the state.
