For many families, particularly those on fixed incomes, this trend means bills that are increasingly difficult to manage.
Specifically, gas delivered on 3 September was traded at an average price of 359.98 RON/MWh. At the end of February, the price stood at 150 RON/MWh, meaning the increase exceeds 210 RON – in other words, the current price is nearly 2.5 times higher than it was just a few months ago. According to an assessment carried out by Transgaz, the national gas transmission operator, between 27 February and 7 September prices on the Romanian Commodities Exchange (BRM) rose by 125%.
Why prices are rising
This price increase is linked to several factors:
- The tense geopolitical situation in the Middle East and uncertainties surrounding energy transport through the Strait of Hormuz;
- Low gas storage levels across Europe: storage facilities are approximately 67% full, compared with the usual average of around 83% for this time of year;
- Developments in liquefied natural gas (LNG) deliveries – a vessel from Qatar recently passed through the Strait of Hormuz for the first time since July, with other vessels repositioning in the area.
For the period October 2026 – March 2027, quotes remain elevated, ranging between approximately 70 and 75.2 euros/MWh. The highest values are expected at the very start of the cold season, when gas consumption for heating increases significantly.
