Cancer Drug Crisis in Romania: Interrupted Treatment for Cancer Patients

Romania is facing an alarming situation in its healthcare system, with significant disruptions to the supply of essential oncological medicines for patients diagnosed with cancer. This crisis particularly affects older people, who represent a substantial proportion of cancer patients and who depend critically on these treatments for their quality of life and survival.

According to statements made by representatives of the Federation of Cancer Patient Associations (Federația Asociațiilor Bolnavilor de Cancer), there are currently serious shortfalls in access to innovative oncological medicines. This situation is jeopardising the continuity of treatment for thousands of elderly patients fighting various forms of cancer, from breast and prostate cancer to brain and lung tumours.

For older people diagnosed with cancer, the interruption or delay of treatment can have devastating consequences. At this stage of life, the immune system is already weakened, and any delay in administering medication can accelerate the progression of the disease and reduce the chances of recovery. Innovative oncological medicines are often the last hope for patients in the advanced stages of illness.

Families of elderly cancer patients are now confronting painful dilemmas and mounting additional costs. Many are forced to seek private alternatives or to source medicines from other countries, which places an enormous financial burden on pensioners with limited incomes. This situation creates further anxiety during an already profoundly stressful time for patients and their families.

The shortage of innovative medicines in hospitals is compelling oncologists to fall back on older therapies, which are often less effective and carry more pronounced side effects.
