What Usually Causes Back Pain and When You Need to See a Doctor
Back pain is common and rarely serious. Find out about the usual causes and the signs that require medical attention.
Foto ilustrativăPain in the lumbar or thoracic region is a very common problem and, in most cases, does not indicate a serious condition. However, the way the pain presents itself and the accompanying symptoms can change the picture entirely.
Common causes of back pain include muscular overexertion, poor posture, degenerative changes in the spine, disc herniation, or nerve root irritation. Less commonly, pain may be caused by fractures, infections, osteoporosis, or other conditions. The good news is that most acute episodes improve within a few weeks, and prolonged bed rest is not recommended in these situations.
There are, however, signs that require prompt medical attention: pain following significant trauma, the presence of fever, progressively worsening weakness, or loss of bladder or bowel control. If these warning signs are absent, treatment is generally based on adapted movement, pain management, and medical rehabilitation.
