Health sector trade unionists protest against new pay legislation

Employees from the public health and social care systems have taken to the streets to protest against the proposed new pay legislation. The demonstration, organised by the SANITAS trade union, took place in the capital and brought together workers from across the country.

The protest comes in response to what union members consider a deeply flawed legislative proposal, which they describe as "inequitable, incomplete and profoundly unfavourable" for staff working in healthcare and social care.

The situation could have a direct impact on the quality of care services for older people, given that staff employed in care homes and social assistance centres are among the professional categories affected by the new regulations.

The discontent among health and social care workers raises important questions about the sustainability and quality of care provided to elderly people, at a time when Romania is facing an increasingly ageing population.

The protest highlights the tensions within the public sector over pay policy and its impact on essential services for the vulnerable category of older people.
