Funeral Services to Become More Expensive in 2026: Major Impact on Low-Income Families

Romanian families are facing a new financial challenge in 2026, after local authorities in several cities decided to substantially increase funeral service charges. These price rises come at a particularly sensitive time for citizens, who must contend with ever-growing costs amid persistent inflation.

The city of Sibiu exemplifies this worrying trend, with significant increases across almost all funeral services. The grave-digging fee has risen to 585 RON from 525 RON the previous year, whilst interment in a previously occupied plot now costs 625 RON — 65 RON more than before. The use of the mortuary chapel, an essential service for families in their time of grief, has increased to 555 RON per day, a rise of 55 RON.

The impact on elderly people and low-income families is particularly severe, given that this demographic group is most affected by family bereavements. For many pensioners on modest incomes, these costs represent a devastating financial burden at an already emotionally harrowing time.

Funeral transport services have also seen notable increases. Transport within the city now costs 290 RON, up 30 RON from before, whilst for distances of up to 30 kilometres the rate has reached 585 RON compared to 525 RON previously. These increases particularly affect families who need to arrange ceremonies in other localities.

Even exhumation procedures, often required for the reorganisation of burial plots in overcrowded cemeteries, have become more expensive, rising to 805 RON from 725 RON. The annual cemetery maintenance fee, though smaller in absolute terms, has increased by over 10%, from 18 to 20 RON.

Local public administration representatives justify these increases by citing the need to cover rising operational costs and adjust for the rate of inflation. Nevertheless, for many families — particularly those with elderly members or ongoing health concerns — these rises represent an additional financial burden at a time when all living costs have increased considerably.

The situation in Sibiu is not an isolated one, but rather reflects a nationwide trend of rising funeral service charges. This development places particular pressure on vulnerable sections of the population, including elderly people and low-income families, who find themselves having to make major financial sacrifices in order to ensure a dignified funeral for their loved ones.

For families caring for elderly relatives or dealing with health issues among older family members, these increases represent a further concern in long-term financial planning. The need to set aside larger sums for potential funeral costs may affect their ability to allocate resources towards medical care or other day-to-day needs of the elderly members of their household.
