Nocturnal Gastro-oesophageal Reflux: Symptoms and Preventive Measures
Heartburn and night-time regurgitation can disrupt sleep and cause coughing or hoarseness in the morning. Here is what triggers them and when you should see a doctor.
Foto ilustrativăA burning sensation in the chest or regurgitation that occurs immediately after lying down can affect the quality of sleep. Sometimes these episodes continue into the morning, in the form of a cough or hoarseness. The explanation lies in the horizontal position of the body, which encourages the contents of the stomach to rise towards the oesophagus.
This phenomenon is known as nocturnal gastro-oesophageal reflux and occurs when acid or other substances from the stomach reach the oesophagus during the night. In addition to the bitter taste and burning sensation, other symptoms may also appear: a persistent cough, throat irritation, hoarseness, or a worsening of asthma symptoms in those who already suffer from this condition. As a rule, the discomfort intensifies after large meals or when dinner is eaten too close to bedtime.
What can be done
- Avoiding meals in the hours before sleep
- Eliminating or reducing foods that trigger symptoms
- In some cases, sleeping with the upper body elevated
If these symptoms occur frequently, if swallowing becomes difficult, or if symptoms do not improve despite the measures outlined above, a consultation with a gastroenterologist is recommended.
