Government to Discuss Supported Living Services for People with Disabilities

The Romanian Government is preparing to approve significant measures to improve living conditions for people with disabilities, through an emergency ordinance currently on the executive's agenda.

The Ministry of Labour is proposing the introduction of a new type of social service called "Assisted Community Living for Independent Life" — an initiative that could transform the way vulnerable people in Romania are supported.

The project includes several essential components: sheltered housing, the Centre for Independent Life, and other complementary services designed to facilitate social integration. These measures have been specifically conceived to support people with disabilities who are leaving the state system and wish to live independently within their communities.

Assisted living services represent a modern alternative to the traditional institutionalised system, offering beneficiaries the opportunity to develop the skills needed for an autonomous life, whilst receiving the necessary support according to their individual needs.

This initiative aligns with the European trend towards deinstitutionalisation and the promotion of independent living for people with disabilities, marking an important step towards a more inclusive society that is more respectful of these individuals' rights.
