A visible swelling at the base of the neck, a feeling of pressure, or difficulty swallowing may be signs related to the thyroid. Sometimes the change is noticeable to the naked eye; in other cases, it is only discovered during an ultrasound scan.

An enlargement of the thyroid gland is known as a goitre and can have several causes: iodine deficiency, the presence of thyroid nodules, autoimmune thyroiditis, or various hormonal imbalances. A goitre may be diffuse (uniformly spread) or nodular, and thyroid function may remain normal, or may be overactive or underactive. For this reason, the size of the gland alone does not provide sufficient information to determine whether hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, or a structural problem requiring monitoring is present.

To clarify the situation, assessment typically involves an endocrinology consultation, hormonal blood tests, and a thyroid ultrasound. Depending on the results, the doctor may recommend simple monitoring over time, medication, a fine-needle biopsy, or, in certain cases, surgery — particularly if suspicious nodules or symptoms of compression in the neck area are present. The key conclusion is that an enlarged thyroid should not be approached haphazardly, but rather evaluated according to the cause and the specific circumstances of each individual case.
