Dehydration in seniors: why you shouldn't wait until you feel thirsty
The sensation of thirst occurs when dehydration has already begun. Doctors recommend 1.5–3 litres of fluids daily, especially in summer, with elderly people being a particularly at-risk group.

Doctors warn that you should not wait until you feel thirsty before drinking water, as by the time thirst sets in, dehydration has already taken hold.
Among the first signs of fluid loss are headaches, dizziness, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and a marked sense of exhaustion. These symptoms can worsen during heatwave conditions.
According to recommendations from the Austrian Ministry of Health, an adult should drink between 1.5 and 3 litres of fluids per day. The right amount depends on the outdoor temperature, body weight, age, and level of physical activity.
Young children, infants, and elderly people are most at risk of dehydration and require extra attention when temperatures are extreme.
How to stay properly hydrated during a heatwave
Specialists recommend drinking fluids in small but consistent amounts throughout the day, without waiting until you feel thirsty.
Cool or slightly lukewarm drinks are preferable, as they hydrate effectively without placing additional strain on the body.
On very hot days, drinking a few glasses of water at regular intervals can prevent dehydration and reduce the risk of dizziness, exhaustion, or circulatory problems.
In addition to staying hydrated, doctors recommend avoiding sun exposure during the hottest hours of the day, wearing loose-fitting clothing, and including water-rich fruits and vegetables in your diet, such as watermelon, cucumbers, tomatoes, and citrus fruits.
