The trend shows accelerated growth: from 35.2% of GDP in 2019, public debt has reached 61.6% of GDP in 2026, and is set to hit 63.4% in 2027. According to more pessimistic forecasts, the figure could climb to 90% of GDP by 2036.
In terms of actual expenditure, the state is due to pay 60.8 billion RON this year. Furthermore, Romania's total external debt has grown to 230.91 billion euros this year.
