Care homes across Romania

SeniorHelp brings together care homes for the elderly across Romania in a single, searchable directory. A care home — also called an old people's home, residential centre or nursing home (in Romanian: cămin de bătrâni or azil de bătrâni) — offers accommodation, meals, personal care and round-the-clock supervision for elderly people who can no longer manage on their own at home.

There are several types of care home in Romania: private care homes, state-run (public) homes, and homes run by NGOs or religious organisations. Each comes with different costs, admission conditions and waiting lists — which is exactly why comparing them side by side matters.

Prices depend on the county, the room type and the level of care — from a few thousand lei a month for basic care up to more for specialised units (for example dementia or Alzheimer's care). Every profile shows indicative prices, facilities, the type of care offered, availability (free places) and real reviews from families.

Filter the directory by county, type of care, budget or rating, open the profiles that fit, and add a few to your comparison before arranging a visit — and always visit in person before signing a contract.

SeniorHelp is an independent directory, not a care provider. If you are not sure where to start, our family helpline can talk through your situation and recommend suitable homes from the list — at no cost to you.

Frequently asked questions

What is a care home (azil / cămin de bătrâni)?
A care home is a professionally staffed residential centre that provides accommodation, meals, personal care and day-to-day supervision for elderly people who can no longer live independently. Options range from assisted living with shared activities to specialised units for residents who need more support.
What is the difference between an "azil" and a "cămin de bătrâni"?
In everyday Romanian, "azil de bătrâni" and "cămin de bătrâni" mean the same thing — a residential centre that provides housing and care for the elderly. "Cămin" and "centru rezidențial" are the official terms used in legislation, while "azil" is the older, colloquial word. On SeniorHelp both refer to the same listings.
How much does a care home cost in Romania?
Costs vary widely by region, room type and the level of care required — generally in the few-thousand-lei-per-month range, with specialised care costing more. The prices shown on profiles are indicative; use the cost calculator for a monthly estimate and always confirm the current figure and what it covers with the home directly.
What types of care home are there?
Mainly three: private care homes (the most common, with the widest choice), state-run (public) homes run by the county social-assistance directorates, and homes run by NGOs or religious organisations. They differ in cost, admission criteria and waiting times.
How do I find a care home with free places?
Filter the directory by county and open the profiles that fit, then contact the homes directly to confirm current availability — occupancy changes often. The helpline can also point you to homes that currently have places.
How do I find the right care home?
Set your budget and the type of care needed, filter the directory by county and rating, then compare a shortlist of homes on facilities, location and family reviews. Always visit in person before signing a contract.
What documents are needed to move into a care home?
Usually identity documents, recent medical documents from the family doctor describing the person's condition and needs, and in some cases a social assessment. Requirements differ from one home to another, so confirm the exact list with the chosen home before admission.
Who pays for a care home?
Most often the family and the resident's pension cover the monthly fee. For public homes, or in specific situations, part of the cost may be supported by the state through the county social-assistance directorate (DGASPC). Confirm the arrangement with the specific home.
Does SeniorHelp charge families to use the directory?
No. Browsing the directory, reading reviews, comparing homes and using the family helpline are free for families. SeniorHelp is an independent marketplace that connects families with centres — it is not itself a care provider.
