Private hospitals have surpassed 5 billion RON in turnover, up 30% on the previous year
The private hospital sector in Romania reached 5 billion RON in revenue in 2025, double the 2021 figure, driven by investment and a shift of patients towards private healthcare services.

Romania's private hospital sector recorded accelerated business growth last year, according to data from mfinante.ro. Companies classified under CAEN code 8610 – "Hospital care activities" posted a combined turnover of 5 billion RON, approximately 30% more than the previous year. These companies' profits grew by 25%, reaching 205 million RON.
In just five years, the sector has effectively doubled its revenues, driven by operator investments and a growing number of patients choosing private treatment.
The 2025 growth rate is among the fastest in recent years – the sector added over one billion RON in revenues in a single year. By comparison, the combined turnover for 2024 stood at approximately 4 billion RON, following a 27% increase on 2023. Five years ago, in 2021, private hospital revenues totalled 2.2 billion RON.
The number of active companies in the sector has also risen, from 418 in 2021 to 461 in 2025.
The data points to a sector in an active phase of investment and expansion. Private hospitals generally have fewer beds than public ones, but operators are continuously investing in medical equipment, new technologies, and capacity expansion. An increasing number of patients are opting for private healthcare, although the majority of costs are paid directly out of pocket – only a small proportion of private services are reimbursed on the basis of a referral.
To illustrate costs, an inguinal hernia operation at a private hospital starts from 7,000 RON (approximately €1,400) and can reach up to 16,000 RON (approximately €3,200), depending on the complexity of the case.
The topic of investment in private healthcare will be discussed by major market operators at the ZF Pharma&Health Summit, scheduled for 28 and 29 September.
