Health unions decide today whether to launch a general strike on Tuesday

Romania's healthcare system is at a critical juncture. Health sector trade unions have a meeting scheduled today at 1:00 PM with county leaders from across the country, during which it will be decided whether a general strike will begin on Tuesday, according to Realitatea PLUS.

The final details regarding how the protest will be organised and how hospital services will be maintained during the strike are set to be finalised at the meeting. Should union leaders approve the launch of the protest, medical units will move to a reduced operating capacity.

What this means for patients

During the general strike, hospitals will only accept cases deemed medical emergencies. Services will be maintained by approximately one third of medical staff, as stipulated by the rules governing this type of protest. Surgical procedures and scheduled operations that are not emergencies would be postponed.

The unions' final decision is expected to be announced later today and will determine whether, from Tuesday onwards, Romania's healthcare system enters one of its most widespread forms of protest in recent years.
