Reorganisation of Romanian Post Could Affect Services for Pensioners and the Elderly

Trade union representatives at Poșta Română (Romania's national postal service) are calling on the Ministry of Economy to postpone the vote on the company's reorganisation, warning of the negative impact these measures could have on essential services for senior citizens.

The restructuring plans could significantly affect the national network of post offices — services that elderly people across Romania rely on regularly for a variety of needs. Pensioners frequently use Poșta Română's services to collect their pensions, pay utility bills, send parcels to relatives, and receive official correspondence.

Union representatives are criticising the lack of transparency in how these measures are being pushed forward, as well as the absence of any consultation with employee representatives. They point out that the reorganisation is taking place at a sensitive time, with the country being led by a caretaker government — raising questions about the legitimacy of decisions with long-term consequences.

Postal workers' representatives warn that the proposed changes could undermine the maintenance of the universal service obligation, a critical component in ensuring postal services remain accessible in rural areas and to vulnerable sections of the population, including senior citizens.

For elderly people in small communities and isolated areas, post offices are often the only readily accessible means of reaching basic financial and administrative services, and any reduction in this network could create considerable difficulties in their day-to-day lives.
