Military pensioners remain in limbo: pension increase bill postponed once again

Military pensioners in Romania are facing yet another delay in the modernisation of the defence pension system. The legislative bill that would have allowed pensions to be recalculated based on the current salaries of active military personnel was unexpectedly withdrawn from the agenda of the Labour Committee of the Chamber of Deputies.

This decision comes as a blow to the thousands of military pensioners who have been hoping for years to see an improvement in their financial situation. The proposed legislative amendment would have brought greater fairness to the military pension system, bringing pensions in line with current army salary levels.

The bill had been scheduled for review following a prior ruling by the Constitutional Court, which made its withdrawal all the more surprising. The exact reasons for the postponement have not been officially communicated, leaving military pensioners in a state of uncertainty.

For the majority of military pensioners, this delay means the continuation of a difficult financial situation, in which pensions remain at unsatisfactory levels compared to the current cost of living and to salaries within the defence sector.

There is as yet no clear date for the resumption of discussions on this legislative bill, generating frustration among the military pensioner community, who have long been awaiting this much-needed reform.
