Pensions have not been indexed for 2 years, and the "minor recalculation" has been delayed by a year and a half

For two years, pensions in Romania have not been indexed to the inflation rate, even as the country faces the highest inflation rate relative to income in the European Union. The austerity measures of the government led by Ilie Bolojan are directly affecting the purchasing power of millions of pensioners, who are paying more each month for food and utility bills, without their incomes being adjusted accordingly.

The situation is made all the more difficult by the fact that approximately 1 million senior citizens in Romania are currently living on the minimum pension of 1,281 RON, while the minimum monthly consumption basket for a single person exceeds 5,000 RON.

At the same time, another million pensioners have been waiting for a year and a half for the completion of a process known as the "minor recalculation". Although they are due to receive a monthly pension supplement of between 50 and at most 500 RON, the money has yet to reach the beneficiaries, and the recalculation process remains incomplete. No definitive deadline for its completion is known.
