A report by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) indicates that the retirement age could reach 67 in Romania as well, as more European countries raise their retirement thresholds.

According to the cited source, the current average retirement age across the European Union is 64.7 years for men and 64 years for women. For the generation that entered the labour market in 2024, OECD calculations point to a significantly higher retirement age: 66.7 years for men and 66.4 years for women, which in practice means a threshold close to 67 years.

What is changing in Romania

In Romania, the law already provides for a gradual increase in the retirement age for women, which will be equalised with that of men by 2035, reaching 65 years.

This increase has already partially come into effect: from 1 July, the standard retirement age rose by one month. As a result, women can currently retire at 62 years and 7 months, whilst men retire at 65 years.

According to the same OECD report, the retirement age could continue to rise in line with changes in the population's average life expectancy.
