Eurostat: Romania among EU Member States with the Highest Fuel Price Increases

Romania is among the European Union countries where fuel prices have risen the most over the past year, according to data published on Wednesday by Eurostat. Compared to June 2025, prices for fuels and lubricants for personal transport increased by 23.1%, a rise surpassed only by Bulgaria and Lithuania.

Across the European Union as a whole, the average price of fuels and lubricants rose by 13.7% in June 2026 compared to the same month of the previous year.

In the annual price increase rankings, Romania occupies third place, behind Bulgaria, where the rise was 26%, and Lithuania, at 23.5%. At the other end of the scale, the smallest price increases were recorded in Hungary (2.3%) and Poland (5.8%).

Eurostat notes that prices rose in all 27 member states, though the pace of increases slowed compared to May, when the European average stood at 20.7% and four countries were reporting annual increases of over 30%.

Petrol and diesel cheaper than in May

Although fuel prices remain significantly higher than last year, they fell in June compared to the previous month. Across Europe, diesel became on average 6.4% cheaper, and petrol 4.2% cheaper compared to May.

Diesel prices fell in all member states. The largest reductions were in the Czech Republic (-11.3%), Poland (-9.7%), and Bulgaria (-9.4%), whilst the smallest were in Hungary (-0.6%), Italy (-1.4%), and Slovenia (-1.6%).

For petrol, the only price increases compared to May were in Cyprus (+0.7%) and Italy (+0.5%). In the remaining member states, petrol became cheaper, with the largest falls recorded in Sweden (-7.8%), Belgium (-7%), and Poland (-6.6%).

In Romania, both petrol and diesel became nearly 4% cheaper in June 2026 compared to the previous month, according to Eurostat, although measured against June 2025, the country remains among the EU member states with the largest fuel price increases.
