Case of West Nile confirmed in Videle, Teleorman: the town hall advises avoiding going out in the evening

Authorities in the town of Videle, Teleorman County, have confirmed a case of West Nile virus infection in a local resident. The diagnosis was established by specialists at the "Prof. Dr. Matei Balș" National Institute for Infectious Diseases in Bucharest, according to an announcement made by the town's mayor, Cornel Gogan, as reported by Impact News 24.

The exact location where the individual came into contact with the virus is not yet known. Authorities have not confirmed that the infection occurred in Videle – it may have taken place in another locality or even abroad.

What the local council is advising residents

As a precautionary measure, the mayor is urging residents to avoid spending time outdoors after dark as much as possible, since mosquitoes – through which the virus is transmitted – are most active in the evening. People are advised to take care to protect themselves against mosquito bites and to follow official guidance.

Three evenings of pest control

The local administration has announced mosquito control operations scheduled each evening from Friday through to Sunday inclusive, which will cover the entire town of Videle and all of its neighbourhoods. During the operations, residents are encouraged to remain indoors to avoid exposure to the substances being used.

West Nile virus is transmitted primarily through the bite of infected mosquitoes. Infection often passes without symptoms or with only mild manifestations; however, in some individuals it can develop into a severe illness.
